What Is the Children’s Health Insurance Plan in Ohio?

Ohio offers children from low-income households Medicaid options for health insurance coverage under the program Healthy Start, which is also referred to as the State Children’s Health Insurance Program or SCHIP.

Basic Benefits
All enrolled children are eligible to receive medical care and surgical services from Ambulatory Surgery Centers, certified family nurse practitioners, certified pediatric nurse practitioners, physicians, dentists, ophthalmologists, clinics, health centers, home health providers, and nursing home staff. Inpatient and outpatient services are also covered along with x-rays and lab services. Additionally, the program offers family planning services and supplies.

Eligibility
In order to qualify for the Healthy Start Program applicants must be citizens of the United States or an Ohio resident who is able to provide a Social Security number. Applicants must also have a household income that falls below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Healthchek Feature
Healthchek is the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) Program offered through Healthy Start. It serves to find and treat health problems early on through screenings and annual exams.
